Flat Rolled Carbon Steel - A Product Overview
In today’s blog we will review Camden Yards Steel’s product overview. As a flat rolled steel processing and distributing company, we specialize in cut-to-length and slit carbon steel products.
What is carbon steel sheet and plate?
In simple terms, carbon steel is manufactured domestically and internationally by steel mills where it is smelted and laid out in a slab form while it is still hot. While hot, the slab is passed through various rollers and “stretched” out until the steel reaches its desired gauge or thickness. As the slab is passed through rollers, it becomes elongated.
In order to ship the carbon steel sheet and plate more easily, the steel is rolled up into coil form and shipped to flat rolled steel processors, like Camden Yards Steel. Camden Yards Steel then processes these coils by levelling and cutting them to length or by slitting and ships them to steel distributors and product manufacturers.
Several carbon steel products that Camden Yards Steel carries in coil, sheet, plate, and slit coil form include:

Hot Rolled Steel Sheet, Plate, and Coil
Hot rolled steel is the most basic form of carbon steel. During the process of creating hot rolled steel, a chemical reaction occurs that causes an iron oxide scale to form on the surface of the steel. Because of this scale, hot rolled steel is best suited for use where the surface finish is not critical to the end user. Hot rolled carbon steel is used in construction, shipbuilding, appliances, industrial machinery, etc.
Hot Rolled Floor/Diamond Plate Coil and Plate
Diamond/floor plate is hot rolled carbon steel that has raised lugs in a diamond shaped pattern on surface. It is ideal for its non-slip features and is used on ramps, catwalks, stairs, etc.
Hot Rolled High Strength Low Alloy Steel Sheet, Plate, and Coil
High strength low alloy steel is more corrosive resistant than regular carbon steel and have higher yield strength and toughness and can therefore handle more stress than regular carbon steel. High strength steel is used in truck bodies, cranes, bridges, etc.
Hot Rolled Pickled and Oil (P&O) Sheet, Plate, Coil and Slit Coil
Hot Rolled P&O steel is created through a process where the scale that forms on the surface of carbon steel is removed using acid baths. Once the skin is removed, the steel is “pickled” when dried oil is applied to its surface to prevent rusting. HRP&O steel is used in things like equipment, shelving, stampings, etc.

Cold Rolled Steel Sheet, Coil, and Slit Coil
Cold rolled steel is a much finer finished metal than hot rolled carbon steel. It is created by taking HRP&O steel and putting it through a cold reduction. The steel is then sent through an annealing process and is temper rolled. It is stronger than traditional hot rolled steel and its finer finish allows for it to be used in consumer products such as refrigerators, washers, small appliances, etc.
Coated Steel Products
GALVANIZED, GALVANNEAL, ELECTRO GALVANIZED, ALUMINIZED, GALVALUM
THICKNESSES: .012 (30 Gauge) - .130 (10 Gauge)

GRADES: CS TYPE B / Drawing Steels / High Strength & Low Alloy
Galvanized Steel Sheet, Coil, and Slit Coil
Galvanized steel is cold rolled steel that is hot-dipped in a zinc bath. When the steel is taken out from the bath, the zinc and oxygen form a chemical reaction that permanently bonds the zinc to the steel allowing for a much more corrosive resistant material. Galvanized steel is present in HVAC units and ducts.
Electro-Galvanized Steel Sheet, Coil, and Slit Coil
Electro-galvanized steel is also cold rolled steel but it is submerged in a cool zinc bath, in which electrical currents run through causing the zinc to bond to the steel. This processes causes electro-galvanized steel to have a higher corrosion resistance and higher performance than galvanized steel. Electro-galvanized steel is used in appliances, agricultural equipment, etc.
Galvannealed Steel Sheet, Coil, and Slit Coil
Galvannealed steel is created when cold rolled steel goes through the combined galvanizing and annealing process, creating a zinc alloy layer. This layer is very fine and matte like, does not flake, and allows for paint to easily be applied to the steel. Galvannealed steel is used in products like road signs and electronic equipment.
